Washing machine hose failure is one of the most common causes of home water damage insurance claims in Australia — and one of the most preventable. A burst inlet hose can pump mains-pressure water into your laundry for hours before anyone notices, particularly if it happens while you’re at work or asleep. Understanding how your machine’s hoses work, and replacing them before they fail rather than after, is cheap insurance against an expensive problem.
Inlet Hose vs Drain Hose
Every washing machine has two different hoses doing two different jobs, and they’re not interchangeable:
- Inlet hose(s): carry fresh water from your wall taps into the machine, under full mains pressure. Front loaders usually have one or two (hot and cold, or cold-only for cold-fill machines); top loaders typically have one or two depending on model.
- Drain hose: carries used, dirty water out of the machine to your household drain, plumbing standpipe, or laundry tub. This hose isn’t under pressure — it just needs a clear path with the correct fall (slope) to drain properly.
Fitting Inlet Hoses Correctly
- Check the washers (rubber seals) are seated inside both ends of the hose before connecting — a missing or perished washer is the single most common cause of a slow drip leak at the connection point.
- Hand-tighten the hose connector onto the tap and the machine’s inlet valve, then give it a further quarter turn with pliers or a wrench — snug, not over-tightened. Overtightening can crack the plastic housing on the machine’s inlet valve.
- Turn the tap on fully and check both connection points for drips before pushing the machine back into position.
- If your machine takes both hot and cold inlet hoses, make sure each is connected to the correct tap — connecting them backwards won’t damage the machine but will affect wash temperatures.
Turn Off the Tap When Not in Use
This is the single biggest thing you can do to prevent hose-related flooding. Inlet hoses are under full mains water pressure at all times the tap is open — including when the machine isn't running. If you're going away for more than a few days, or simply want to minimise risk, turn off the tap supplying your washing machine between uses.
Fitting the Drain Hose
The drain hose needs to loop upward before it goes down to the drain point — this is called an anti-siphon loop, and it stops dirty water siphoning back into the machine between cycles. Most drain hoses have a plastic hook or bracket designed to hold this loop at the correct height (usually specified in your machine’s installation manual, often around 60-100cm above floor level). Skipping this loop, or letting the hose sag below the required height, is a common cause of poor draining and bad smells.
Make sure the hose end sits securely in the drain point without being pushed in so far it creates an airtight seal — dirty water needs room to flow out around the hose, not just through it.
Common Hose Problems
Slow Drip at the Connection
Almost always a perished or missing rubber washer. These cost a few dollars at any hardware store and take two minutes to replace — turn off the tap, disconnect the hose, replace the washer, and reconnect.
Reduced Water Flow Into the Machine
Often caused by sediment build-up in the small mesh filter located where the inlet hose screws onto the machine (not the tap end). Unscrew the hose from the machine, and you’ll usually find a small mesh screen just inside the connection point. Gently clean it with an old toothbrush under running water. This is especially common in hard water areas.
Water Pooling Around the Machine After Use
Check the drain hose isn’t kinked, cracked, or disconnected from its bracket. A cracked drain hose can look fine until it’s under the pressure of draining a full wash load, at which point it splits.
Loud Banging Noise When the Machine Fills or Stops Filling
Known as “water hammer,” this happens when the inlet valve closes suddenly and the moving water column has nowhere to go. It’s more of a plumbing characteristic than a hose fault, but replacing an old, stiff inlet hose with a new one can sometimes reduce it. Persistent water hammer across multiple appliances usually points to a plumbing issue worth having assessed.
When to Replace Washing Machine Hoses
Standard rubber inlet hoses degrade with age and mains pressure exposure, even without visible damage. As a guide:
- Standard rubber hoses: replace every 3-5 years regardless of visible condition, since internal degradation isn’t always visible from outside.
- Braided stainless steel hoses: last considerably longer (often rated 8-10 years) and are worth the small extra cost specifically because they’re far less likely to burst catastrophically — the steel braiding contains a failure even if the internal rubber liner degrades.
- Any hose showing bulging, cracking, discolouration, or stiffness: replace immediately, regardless of age.
The Cheap Upgrade Worth Making
If your machine still has the original rubber hoses it came with, upgrading to braided stainless steel inlet hoses is one of the cheapest, highest-value preventative upgrades you can make to a laundry — typically $15-30 per hose, against a water damage claim that can run into thousands.
A Quick Maintenance Habit
Every few months, pull the machine out slightly (with the water off) and visually check both hoses along their full length for bulging, cracking, or wear at the connection points — particularly where the hose bends behind the machine, which is under the most repeated stress. This takes two minutes and catches most failures before they become a flooded laundry.
